Since I got a bit addicted to surfing a year ago, every
holiday is schedulded to a destination where you can surf. This fact can be
pretty annoying for the people traveling with you – at least if they are not
into surfing. So there is always the challenge to find a compromise.

My current journey took me to Fuerteventura. On this wonderful island you have some nice waves, even in summer. Not the biggest ones, but for me as a beginner/intermediate it is totally fine. And as long as I get some surfing done, I am happy.Fuerteventura offers amazing white sand beaches, with beach breaks and along the cost between El Cotillo and Corralejo countless riffbreaks to surf.
For people who would like to start to surf. I can only
recommend to take some lessons first, to get to know the „rules“. This is
necessary to be safe and also to not disturb the more experienced surfers in
the water. You will feel much more comfortable, if you know how to handle your
board, and how to either catch or overcome a wave. I got my first lessons at Pukas Surf School in San Sebastian. Those who follow my instagram(@bonsoircherieblog), know, that I am a recent guest in this beautiful village in the basque country.
As said I am still pretty new to surfing. Even if I travelled a lot during the last year, to follow my passion, I am considering myself starting to be on an intermediate level. That’s why I can’t call a board mine so far. I first want to find out, which one is the perfect shape and volume for me. So the first step is always to check available surfschools and shops at the travel destination. I always rented a board and the advantage is, you can change size and shape according to your needs and also according to the daily conditions of the waves.
What I bought pretty soon, is a wetsuit – as the ones from schools are often pretty overused, this is a good investment. So far I never had the pleasure to surf in warm water, as I travelled to spots like San Sebastian, Tenerife, or Portugal during Winter and early Spring. So what I got ist he most common 3/2 wetsuit. For me this is the right thickness if it is cloudy and the water temperature is between 15-20 degrees. If it’s colder I rented a thicker one. Neoprene boots will also help to keep your feet warm, if you surf in colder water.
Sunscreen is something super important if it comes to surfing. Never forget to protect your skin. On
Surfertoday you can fine the surfers most beloved sun protective products. Beside that, I always bring my waterproof northface bag to store my wet stuff, and some warm clothes for after the surf. Underneath the wetsuit I lately only wear my Calvin Klein Bikini as it is the perfect match for sport and is super comfy without any strings or clasps like most common bikini under the wetsuit.
Surfing caught me, because to me there is little more satisfying than being out in the water. You are so concentrated on the waves and the water is at the same time calming down, that you forget all the stress and all the worries you might have had and just get out of the water after the session like a newborn.

Mein perfekter Surftrip
Es ist ein Jahr her, seit ich das erste Mal surfen war.
Seither bin ich so oft es nur geht den Wellen nachgereist. Das ist nicht ganz
einfach für meine Reisebegleitung, aber es gibt Gottseidank auch Destinationen,
wo man neben dem Wellenreiten auch ein Städtchen besichtigen, oder faul am
Sandstrand liegen kann. Das Schönste ist natürlich, mit jemandem zu reisen, der
das Surfen genauso liebt.
Meine aktuelle Reise hat mich nach Fuerteventura gebracht.
Hier findet man auch im Sommer einige (wenn auch kleinere) Wellen. Für mich als
Intermediate reicht das prima aus. Und die Insel hat neben wunderschönen
Stränden auch tolle Restaurants und eine aussergewöhnliche Landschaft zu
bieten.
An der Küste im Nordwesten von El Cotillo nach Corralejo
finden sich zahlreiche Spots für Surfer und auch Kitesurfer. Im letzten
November haben wir uns grösstenteils bei Punta Gorda und Punta Blanca
aufgehalten, dieses Mal war ich jeweils bei Morro. Der Beachbreak bietet momentan schöne kleine grüne Wellen. Die Konditionen in Fuerteventura sind
praktisch das ganze Jahr gut, da es entlang der Küste für jedes Niveau einen
Spot gibt.
Momentan reise ich noch ohne eigenes Brett, da ich erst noch
das perfekte Brett für mich suche. Einen Wetsuit habe ich mir relativ bald
gekauft, da es einfach angenehmer ist. Und einmal trocken ist so ein Anzug auch
leicht und lässt sich problemlos im Koffer verstauen.
Es ist jeweils anzuraten vor einem Trip zu checken, wo dass
Surfschulen sind, die auch Boards vermieten, und bestenfalls sogar kurz den
Bestand nachzufragen, um keine bösen Überraschungen zu erleben und ohne Brett dazustehen.
Einmal ist es mir in Teneriffa passiert, dass nach einem Wochenende noch ein
Feiertag lag, und alle Surfrentals geschlossen waren.
Was mich am surfen so begeistert, ist das Gefühl im Wasser. Einmal im Meer, sind alle Sorgen und Gedanken vergessen und es zählen nur noch die Wellen. Selbst wenn es mal keine gute Session war, die Wogen des Ozeans haben eine wunderbar entspannende Wirkung.
Gerne möchte ich einige meiner Lieblingsprodukte mit euch teilen, die ich immer dabei habe für einen perfekten Surftrip.
Sonnenschutz – durch die Reflexion der Sonne auf dem Wasser,
ist die Haut noch viel stärker der Sonne ausgesetzt. Auf Surfertoday findet man
eine Auflistung der bewährtesten Sonnenschutzmittel.
Immer dabei sind mein Wetsuit, oder ein Rashguard, falls die Temperaturen es zulassen, und je nach dem wo sich der Spot befindet, auch Neopren Boots zum Schutz vor dem scharfen Riff.
Alles verpackt in meiner wasserdichten Northface Tasche oder auch eine blaue Ikea Tasche, damit das Auto nicht unter dem nassen Wetsuit leidet. Mein Calvin Klein Bikini hat sich als perfektes Sportbikini unter dem Wetsuit herausgestellt und ist seither immer mit dabei.
